WHEN You Submit Auditions DOES Matter!

Hey Folks!

I had some time to sit and think a bit on what makes one more profitable in voicever. Obviously, I’m still in a hard ramp-up phase as I continue to push my VO career hard since the layoff in April of this year. I’ve been doing all the things I have been taught to do to ensure that one is more profitable. I won’t go into what all those things are on this post, but they are most definitely gaining me traction. One thing did hit me a way I was self-sabotaging my efforts, though, and I didn’t come to the realization until recently.

Follow me on this. When I was still employed, I had to wake up and get online early. In order to get my workouts in, I had to wake up even earlier to make sure I was able to bang that out, see the kids off to school, and then be logged in for work. This was the routine for years, but then life happened, as they say. A few circumstances that happened, one after the other, causing a bit of a domino effect of the unproductive kind. I had my shoulder surgery in late March. This meant no working out for a few months. This also meant I wouldn’t be waking up at the butt-crack of dawn to start my day for a while. Ths was followed by the layoff in April, at which point, I was no longer waking up early to hit the gym, nor did I need to be up early to log in for work. Then in late May, the kids hit summer break, which meant I didn’t even have to get up to see the off to school, as they would be sleeping in late for the next few months. All this caused a situation where I wasn’t pressed to get up early and hit my VO work.

THIS WAS A BAD THING FOR REVENUE!!! My numbers fell!

One thing that most seasoned VO people know, is that your chances of booking a gig by nailing an audition go up if you get your audition in earlier rather than later. With me sleeping in a few extra hours each day, I was no longer catching those auditions as early as I had been, and as such, my auditions were submitted a bit later, and sometimes, I would completely miss opportunities on the pay-to-play sites as a result of my extended slumber! All that = no bueno for my ramp-up efforts.

That ends this week. My shoulder recovery is going well, and I’m back in the gym and working my way back to normal. My kids are back in school this week. VO is no longer a side gig…this IS my career, and I’ll be sure to be that early bird who is up catching all those worms!

The moral of the story is, while you sleep, someone else is taking your lunch in this game. Rest is important, sure, but make sure you keep your discipline, and keep a routine that increases your chances of success. For me, early to bed and early to rise will help to get my revenues back up, because I’ll be early to respond to those auditions, thereby increasing my chances of booking those gigs!
