Well…That Escalated Quickly – COVID-19!

Ok…so, this is now a thing…and apparently, a SERIOUS thing. A PANDEMIC!!!

This was an odd week. Took a cruise with some buddies…mostly former co-workers…a little 4 day cruise. We do this from time to time…just a guy’s trip. We’ve done Vegas, Cruises, whatever…just to get away and blow off some steam…but this time…was different!

We set sail on March 12, 2020, and returned to port on March 16th. When we boarded the ship, the world was (somewhat) normal. People out: working, partying, the usual stuff. When we returned, however, it turns out that we were on the LAST CRUISE SHIP SAILING THE OPEN SEAS IN THE WORLD! The ENTIRE WORLD shut down while we were on a cruise ship, and, well…we didn’t know what to do. We only realized how serious it was when we caught word that, not only were the kids not allowed to return to school after Spring Break, but also, Disney World closed! They almost NEVER close. I mean, hurricanes aside, it just doesn’t happen! The world is locked down, and we don’t know how bad this will get, or how long it will last. I don’t know that we’re prepared for this, but ready or not…here we go!

During these times, there is a lot to think about, and for me VO wasn’t initally one of them. Now that I’ve been back a few days, however (and stuck quarantining a few weeks from my wife and kids after my little cruise adventure with the guys), I began to think about how this would impact voiceover work. After all, this is how I plan to make a living one day, so it’s natural to wonder about how something like this would impact the world of VO. I mean, some VO artists still go to studios to record occasionally, but for the most part, most seem to have built comfy home studios from which to work. Does this “pandemic-proof” them a bit? I Supposed the older, more traditional VO artists might now be thrust into the world of having to do more than just arrive at the studio, lay down voice, and go home. They may actually need to learn to engineer their own audio, and things of this nature. I would have to imagine that this COVID lockdown situation will favor those that have already been comfy doing things from home studios for a while.

Without a doubt, we’re about to see some things that we’ve probably never seen before, or could have ever imagined. It’s already starting out that way. How this thing will impact various industries, employers, employees, I mean, it boggles my mind right now. I guess for me, anything I say here is just speculation until we see how it all unfolds, but yeah, scary times, folks.

I wish you all well! Just stay safe, and do what you must to protect yourselves and your families! Hopefully, we will come out on the other side of this thing stronger and a bit wiser!
