So back on my last post, I said that I’d be starting up my social media presence. Well, I did. Facebook and IG are both up and running. As I had previously mentioned, my first order of business was to get friends and family to hold me accountable to my goals, not that I NEEDED that, but let’s face it, once you put yourself out there, it’s a bit tough to just slack on your goals in such a public way.
So the next thing for me was figuring out what to do with this newfound social media presence. For me, the obvious choice was to do something that made me a bit more uncomfortable yet, and that was to actually record, and post. YUP…nervous doesn’t quite fit my feelings, but the way I see it, if I’m going ot have a voice out on commercials on TV, radio, and web one day, I’m going to need to get used to people hearing my work. Might as well get those nerves numbed now, for a smaller audience! So, I started to find commercials online. A recommendation from Bill DeWees was iSpot.tv. They have just about any commercial you can want to find. The task: find a commercial, and take a crack at re-dubbing it in my own voice. The post it, and see if it passes the friends & family test. Do they like it? Will they be honest enough to tell me if I absolutely suck? The only way I could be sure was to ask for direct feedback. They’re not agents, or casting directors…not pros in the field at all, but what they are, is the AVERAGE CONSUMER. Does my voice speak to them? Could they totally envisiont that ad spot as being done in my voice on TV, instead of the voice that was originally hired for the job. For me, this was do-or-die time!
Well, not only were may first few dubbed ad spots well received, but I was actually pinged by some potential clients for some work off of those! I guess there is something to this whole “putting yourself out there on social media” thing! I was floored, and after booking my first 2 gigs, really without even trying, I can now say that I am officially a PAID VO TALENT! I mean, the bar wasn’t set very high, but in short, someone wanted my voice enough to may me for it, and that now makes me a professional in this business. That’s all it takes! I still can’t believe that happened with me still not having my studio space done…or not even having start it, to be more precise! I recorded these demo spots in my office with a heavy comforter thrown over my head! We all start somewhere, and my first paid gigs came when I didn’t even expect them! I’m beyond excited to see what the future holds!
