The Studio Has Gained New Gear!

So, this is not a long post, but in keeping my promise to detail all the important steps in my journey, this one felt like something I couldn’t leave out.

An important part of being a VO Artist, is, as mentioned in previous posts, the ability to properly edit/engineer your audio. Sometimes, however, it’s tough to pick up in imprefections and artifacts in my audio from just using the laptop speakers, or even larger desktop speakers. You need to hear the sound as a flat response. You need to hear it reproduced exactly as it is, without any added ‘treatment’. For this reason, I felt I needed a solid set of studio headphones.

Now, not just any set of headphones will do. Again, you need a FLAT response from the headphones that adds nothing to the sound. This is why headphones such as Beats by Dre, and various other styles will not work. A lot of those are for musical enjoyment, and they tend to get heavy on the bass and other audio aspects to enhance the music listening experience. There are a ton of good ones out there, but I know I need a good, closed-back set of headphones that won’t break me. Again, I’m not earning any income off of this just yet. I do realize, however, that I’m also not a starving artist who has to struggle his way to get decent gear. Not everyone gets to have the jump-start that I can afford. So I set a little rule: I won’t go for top-of-the-line, but no longer will I deal in the ‘bargain basement’ either. I’ll get decent stuff from here on out, and maybe when I start earning, I’ll shoot for more top-of-the-line equipment.

So, my latest addition, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. These things are pretty awesome, and now I can hear every little click, pop, and imperfection as I play my audio back to edit. I feel it really has helped me to step up my game, even if only slightly so. That’s fine by me, though, as the goal is just to get a little better with each passing day. I feel as though I’m on the right path. Oh…and yeah…this post got longer than I expected it to. Sorry about that!

Until next time!
