Moved in Now…But Where Did My $ Go???

Well, it’s done and official. We’re now residents of Forsyth County in Cumming, GA!

Moving is like my #1 LEAST favorite thing to do. All the work, the chaos, the disorganization of it all…just a nightmare…but it’s behind us now and we’re settling in. My wife decided that we weren’t going to bring a lot of the old stuff…so we sold most of it, and are opting to buy most things new, to fit with the style of the new place. As such, those discretionary dollars are suddently disappearing! All the new furniture, appliances, decor -you name it- takes a toll on the ol’ bank account. There is some excitement in it all, but what this effectively means is that, well, there are some expenditures that must now be put on hold for a bit. It’s a little disappointing, but you have to take the good with the bad. We’re excited to be in our new place, and building it out to the home that will likely see our kids off to college. We have everything we need here, and no reason to go anywhere else for quite some time. This move came with a LOT of benefits, but it cost us a few things. My studio will need to wait for a little while, but for the time being, I’ll still continue to further my little educational VO journey, and continue to practice and hone my skills a bit out of my home office, which is a much softer space than my previous home office, so there is one improvement that I’ll take. It’s a step in the right direction.

My equipment is all the same, and I’m still working on Audacity. It’s freeware, sure, but a lot of people poo-poo on this software, and I don’t think it’s warranted. Are they just doing that because of the stigma people put on freeware? Are the other more “professional” DAWs out there really THAT much better? I don’t know, but again, there are working voice actors (VA) out there who are making money running their own business off of Audacity, so that says something. If they’re working from a well-treated space, and really know their way around the software, I can see it working out. Of course, there is an optics side to consider here, as well. What if I am up for a gig one day, and the client asks what software I’m using, and I tell them it’s Audacity? Do they connect some dots there that will cause them to steer clear of me? Do they say “Well, he’s using freeware, which must mean he’s not making much money. Maybe he’s not making much money because he’s not any good at what he does?”. I wonder? I don’t know about any of that, and it’s still too early for me to know…but at some point, it might matter, just not yet.

Look out for my next post, which will likely come in a few months after I’ve settled in further! Take care peeps!
